# Linen vs cotton: compare the label, weave and finish

A practical way to compare linen and cotton without mistaking a fabric texture or crease for proof of composition.

Linen is made from flax and cotton is a different plant fibre. Both can be woven into many fabrics, so compare the composition label with the weave, finish and product details.

## Begin with the fibre name

The Discover Natural Fibres Initiative describes flax fibres from the plant stem as the source of linen. Its reference also explains flax’s crisp handling and tendency to wrinkle. Those are useful background properties, not a guarantee for every finished fabric.

Copy the exact fibre wording and percentages from the tag. Linen-cotton blends deserve their own entry: a blended fabric should not be recorded as pure linen simply because linen appears in the product title.

## Describe the surface independently

Look at yarn crossings, visible variation in yarn thickness and the density of the cloth. Describe what you see as an open weave, a smooth face or an uneven yarn before naming a fibre.

A linen-look cotton or a finished linen blend can complicate a surface-only comparison. Keep the colour, lighting and scale of your photos consistent so you are comparing the fabric rather than the photography.

## Build a useful two-sample study

Choose one clearly labelled linen item and one clearly labelled cotton item. Photograph a similar area of each and record the label, weave and finish separately.

Use Materium to explore each sample and save the scans. In your own notes, compare the assessment with the known labels and write down which cues you found informative. Avoid turning one pair of examples into a universal rule.

## Follow the finished item’s instructions

Care depends on the finished fabric, its colour, trims and construction. Keep the actual care label with your comparison instead of applying a generic washing temperature to every linen or cotton item.

For an unlabelled piece, a maker’s product code or original specification can help complete the record. Until then, a precise construction description keeps your material library useful without requiring an exact fibre claim.
